On April 29th at 3:30pm, Vice President and CPC Central Committee Member Xi Jinping visited the Chongqing Pavilion at the 2010 World Expo hosted in Shanghai and participated in a live demonstration for the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) knife manufactured by Chongqing Haifu Technology Co. Ltd. As explained in the exhibit, the knife operates using the principle of high intensity focused ultrasound, similar to those governing how a magnifying glass can focus sunlight into a single point and set a piece of paper on fire. This technology will allow for direct treatment of tumor patients without surgical incisions by eliminating tumor cells from outside the body, and ultimately result in a woundless treatment. Following the introduction, Xi Jinping expressed great interest in the technology during the live demonstration as well.

After patiently viewing the demonstration, Xi Jinping inquired after the current applications and distribution statistics of the HIFU knife and learned that it is currently the most advanced woundless treatment technology in the international medical sphere. At the same time, this large-scale medical instrument was also manufactured and developed entirely by means of China’s own intellectual resources, currently sold worldwide in 12 developed countries, including the UK, Spain, and Russia. These figures have moved Xi Jinping to express his confidence in this invention from Chongqing that has now become a leading technological innovation on the world stage.
